For the majority of long term residents, Bardwell Park is a carefully guarded secret. Tucked quietly between bustling Bexley and cosmopolitan Earlwood, this somewhat sleepy district is happy to go un-noticed as the throng of city life passes it by. Verdant local parklands, like forgotten pockets of wilderness, play host to scores of migrating water birds.

Around 95% of the area's older homes, built during the housing booms of the 1930's and 50's remain untouched by unsympathetic modern developers. To first time visitors, this leafy old suburb comes as a pleasant surprise.

Deriving its name from the family of Thomas Hill Bardwell, this green, hilly suburb was first settled in the mid 1800's with Mr Bardwell receiving a grant of 1200 acres of land. Streets now lined with family homes were once occupied by pig and dairy farmers who worked hard all week so as to enjoy sunny weekend picnics at the popular Wolli Creek swimming hole.

In 1951, construction of the bridge to Earlwood facilitated a boom, with Bardwell Park riding the wave of housing development then sweeping the entire country. Land prices hit an exponential curve as more and more families began settling up home on large blocks. Many of those families have remained, growing and merging to form the backbone of the suburb.

Now, predictions are that residents can expect a return of the good old days, as the completion of the M5 and other new projects at Arncliffe North once again sets Bardwell Park land prices on the rise ...
