Fremantle

Fremantle is a port city in Western Australia, 19km southwest of Perth’s CBD, at the mouth of the Swan River. It is a vibrant eclectic city, home to heritage buildings, beaches, cafes and restaurants, talented artists and designers.

Fremantle is the end of the Fremantle railway line, which runs from Perth. Perth city is only a 25 minute drive or 30 minute trip by train.

Unlike the majority of Perth suburbs, Fremantle (or Freo, as the locals call it) offers seven day shopping. It is also home to the WA Maritime Museum, Fremantle Prison, Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour, Cappuccino Strip and the historic Fremantle Markets. The area also hosts buskers and other street performers.

The city is popular with diners, catering for all tastes and budgets. Italian and Asian cuisines are abundant as well as seafood. There are numerous cafes and coffee shops, particularly on the famous 'Cappuccino Strip', a section of South Terrace. Fremantle is also popular for its nightlife, second only to Northbridge in Perth's CBD. It attracts people from all over the metropolitan region for its pubs, bars and nightclubs.

Fremantle is recognised as the best preserved 19th Century seaport in the world, with more than 150 buildings classified by the National Trust, including The Round House, The Esplanade Hotel, and the Fremantle Prison.

Fremantle is home to Bathers Beach, South Beach, Port Beach, Leighton Beach and Sandtrax, with other beaches - most notably Cottesloe Beach - less than ten minutes by rail.

The city has a large arts community, with several small art galleries and musical venues and a community theatre company.

Fremantle is home to the main campus of the private Roman Catholic University of Notre Dame Australia. The CBD is also home to a major teaching hospital, Fremantle Hospital.

Secondary schools include John Curtin College of the Arts, South Fremantle Senior High School, Christian Brothers' College and Seton Catholic College. Primary Schools include St Patrick's Primary School, Fremantle Primary School, Winterfold Primary School and Christ the King Primary School.
