Local Suburb Information
Mackay
Mackay is a coastal city about 970km north of Brisbane, on the Pioneer River. Nicknamed the sugar capital of Australia, the region produces more than a third of the nation’s cane sugar. The Port of Mackay boasts the largest bulk export sugar terminal in the world.
In addition to sugar, the region boasts a diverse range of industries including tourism and mining, with the Bowen Basin, to Mackay's west, producing 85% of Australia's coal. Compared to neighbouring regions, Mackay’s tourism industry is small and still developing. However, the region’s humid sub-tropical climate now attracts more than half a million domestic visitors a year.
The Mackay region is home to 143,000 people, while Mackay itself has more than 80,000 residents and offers a large range of services and facilities, many of which are in the city centre. Mackay has three main shopping centres with more than 400 speciality stores - Caneland Shoppingtown, Mount Pleasant Shopping Centre and The City Heart, the latter noted for its boutique stores, restaurants, bars and nightclubs.
Mackay is surrounded by sandy coastline, a total of 31 beaches within comfortable driving distance. Close to the city are Illawong, Far, and Town beaches. Harbour Beach, the most popular, is patrolled. The Northern Beaches (Bucasia, Dolphin Heads, Blacks Beach, Shoal Point, and Eimeo) are popular with visitors, and the location of many emerging sub-divisions. Mackay is also the gateway to the Whitsunday’s southern-most islands, including St Bees, Brampton, Carlisle, Scawfell and Keswick.
The North Coast railway line, operated by Queensland Rail, meets the Western line in the city's south. Rail services from Brisbane pass through Mackay and continue to Townsville and Cairns, including the regular Tilt Train service between Brisbane and Cairns. Mackay Airport has regular flights to Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne as well as regional destinations such as Geelong, Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton and Gladstone.
Mackay Transit Coaches operates from North Mackay down to South Mackay. Mackay’s CBD has the best service coverage.
The Mackay Base Hospital is in West Mackay, about 4km from the CBD, and is the major hospital for the Central Queensland Region. The Pioneer Valley Hospital and Mater Hospital are on the city's north side.
Mackay has numerous primary and secondary schools, both public and private. The Mackay Campus of the Central Queensland University is located in the rural suburb Ooralea, while the Mackay campus of James Cook University is in South Mackay. The city is also home to a TAFE college in the inner city’s south.
