Sutherland - Area Profile

History

Sutherland's history extends back to the earliest period of Sydney's development, when the densely timbered area was logged due to the high demand for timber around Sydney.

By the Mid 1800's the Princes Highway provided a reliable link to Sydney; and by the 1880's a rail line had also been constructed. In 1906 the name Sutherland was officially declared. The Shire Clerk's home and the Council Chambers were contructed in 1915.

Contemporary Sutherland is one if the administrative, shopping and transport hubs of Southern Sydney.

Sutherland's vibrant commercial area provides a Post Office, newsagencies, pharmacies, grocery stores, video stores, supermarkets, butchers and bakeries.

Not only is it thriving in commercial stores but is also home to a great range of cafes and restaurants.

Transport

Sutherland is located 24 kms South of Sydney CBD. The drive to the city would take about 50 minutes following the Princes Highway and Eastern Distributor.
