Chippendale is named after William Chippendale, an early land grant holder, whose estate stretched to the present day site of Redfern railway station. The area is primarily residential, and is noted for possessing the lowest open space per person of any Sydney suburb, according a Fairfax Media report.
Although tightly packed in, Chippendale residents enjoy the close proximity to Broadway shopping, Sydney Uni and, of course, the CBD. And there’s easy access to vast parklands if the need for wide open space arises.
Rows of workers cottages line the streets of Chippendale as well as terraced housing that was originally built for workers in the many factories in the area. The suburb has gone through many incarnations and now boasts some of the finest contemporary warehouse conversions in Sydney.
The 168-year-old Carlton & United brewery is now finished its ambitious redevelopment and is now the ‘Central Park’ urban village, in which residents can ‘live, work and shop’. The site consists of four residential precincts that offer the latest in 21st century living.
Places to eat
There are now a whole bunch of coffee and dining options within the ‘Central Park’ development. Being so close to Glebe and Newtown, it’s easy to get a cheap (and good) bite to eat without travelling to far. And you’re only moments to the Sydney Fish Markets where you can dine-in or buy fresh seafood to take home.
If shopping is your thing then you’re in heaven with Broadway Shopping Centre close by. Here you can find specialty stores, department chains and cinemas. Across City Road is Victoria Park, great for a leisurely stroll or a swim in the outdoor swimming pool. The ‘Central Park’ complex also has excellent facilities and their advertising suggests they will turn the “everyday shopping experience into something special.”
Schools & Education
The University of Technology, Sydney University and the University of Notre Dame Australia each have campuses close to or in the suburb. It’s within walking distance to Darlington Primary School and Glebe Primary School.
Chippendale is located 2km from the CBD with frequent buses along City Road that connect to the city. Central or Redfern train stations are also easily accessible.
