Newtown was a productive farming community settled from the early 19th century. The area was serviced by a general grocery store known as the New Town store – now the corner of Eliza Street and King Street. The shop’s owner John Webster is widely credited for dropping the ‘space’ between ‘New’ and ‘Town’ and referring to the area as ‘Newtown. The suburb grew quickly and was soon a major hub for trade and entertainment with the main drag, King Street lined with hotels, suppliers and retailers. King Street reputedly follows an ancient Aboriginal track which continued all the way to the coastal plains around Botany Bay.
Newtown is one of Sydney fastest growing suburbs in terms of real estate. It is now a highly popular place to live due to the vibrant cafe, dining and wine bar scene, fashion outlets and excellent transport links to the city.
Newtown went through a big growth phase in the late 19th century which is why there are so many Victorian-style terraces and workers cottages packed closely together in the area. Many red brick apartment buildings from the 1960s and 1970s can be found as well as townhouse complexes and a series of reclaimed commercial sites – most notably the Silo apartment complex, which occupies the former Crago Flour Mills and grain silos site on Gladstone Street.
