2018 Inner West Events To Add To Your Calendar

Sydney’s Inner West is a melting pot of vibrant cultures – from the traditional Portuguese settlements to more modern Middle Eastern and Asian influences. This guide looks at some 2018 Inner west events celebrating cultural diversity.

Carnival of Cultures

When: Sunday 18 March 2018, 10 am - 4 pm

Where: Ashfield Park, Ashfield

Carnival of Cultures, held every year at Ashfield Park, offers free cultural performances, children’s entertainment, food stalls, community displays and shopping opportunities for visitors of all ages. Some of the cultural performances include classical Indian dances, Korean drummers and Spanish musical styles. Kids will enjoy jumping castles, face painting and dedicated play areas. From Chinese to American to Portuguese, an array of food options are on offer. A free shuttle bus usually runs from Ashfield Civic Centre to reduce parking burdens on the day. This festival is an excellent way to learn more about different cultures and traditions.

Bairro Português

When: Sunday 4 March 2018, 10 am – 6 pm

Where: Audley and Fisher Streets, Petersham

Bringing authentic Portuguese culture to Sydney’s doorstep, the annual Bairro Português festival held at Petersham celebrates everything Portuguese ­– from music, dance and entertainment to food and cultural activities. A perfect way for the whole family to spend the day, this festival features both a contemporary and traditional taste of Portugal.

Open Inner West

When: 15 June to 24 June 2018

Where: Various Inner West locations

A local council event, Open Inner West spans 10 days celebrating the diversity and culture of the local region. Activities include music, dance, theatre, storytelling, art, workshops, cooking classes, and much more. Food stalls serve an array of international cuisines in a true celebration of cultural diversity. All cultural events will take place between 15 June and 24 June 2018 across a multitude of Inner West locations.

Norton Street Italian Festa

When: Sunday 28 October 2018, 10 am - 5 pm

Where: Norton Street, Leichhardt

With more than 140,000 visitors every year, the Norton Street Italian Festa is a must see Inner West event. A long-standing pillar of the local community, the festival is the perfect way to learn more about the culture and traditions of Sydney’s Italian residents. Plenty of activities are on offer for visitors of all ages. Kids can enjoy animal farms, jumping castles and face painting. The kids at heart will love street performances, cooking demonstrations, gelatos and much more. Hundreds of stalls offer a true taste of Italy – from the food and coffee to entertainment. Norton Street Italian Festa is a fun day out for the whole family while demonstrating Italian culture at its authentic best.
