Hobart is the state capital and most populous city of Tasmania. Founded in 1803 as a penal colony, it is Australia's second oldest capital city after Sydney and is the state's financial and administrative heart. It also serves as the home port for both Australian and French Antarctic operations.

Hobart is in the state's south-east on the estuary of the Derwent River, with the skyline dominated by Mount Wellington, standing 1271m high.

The city offers a blend of heritage, environmental attractions, vibrant art and sporting cultures. It is known for its heritage buildings, parks, restaurants, the Salamanca Markets and various festivals. The city is popular with food lovers, with a variety of boutique wines, famous Tasmanian salmon, crayfish and cheeses, raspberries and strawberries, beer and chocolates.
