R&H Suburb Profile CAVES BEACH

Caves Beach is a locality on the Swansea peninsula between Lake Macquarie and the Pacific Ocean in NSW. It is part of the City of Lake Macquarie local government area. It is 2km south-east of Swansea, less than 30km from Newcastle and has a population of more than 4100.

The locality is named for the large number of caves on the nearby coastline. It has a popular surfing and spear fishing beach.

Caves Beach derives its name from sea caves in the headland at the southern end of the beach. The beach runs for just 300m north to the sandy foreland and Swansea (Hams) Beach. The surf club, a park and parking are located at the southern end. A road runs the length of the beach with additional parking along much of the beach.

Caves Beach is part of the Lake Macquarie region, one of the fastest growing cities in the Hunter, and one of the largest cities in NSW. It is the fourth most populous city in NSW, and the eighth most populous city in Australia.

The population of Lake Macquarie is expected to grow by 60,000 – 70,000 people over the next 25 years, which will create a demand for 36,500 new dwellings.

There is a public school, with a high school in neighbouring Swansea. The town is served by Belmont District Hospital, with other major hospitals in Newcastle.
