R&H Suburb Profile KAPUNDA

Kapunda is a town near the Barossa Valley in South Australia, an hour’s drive from Adelaide’s CBD.

Known as the gateway to both the Barossa and Clare Valley wine regions, it is the oldest mining town in Australia, established after a discovery in 1842 of significant copper deposits. However, all the mines closed in 1912.

Today, Kapunda is a producer of cereal crops, mainly wheat, barley and oats. Value-added services carried out by local industry include stock feed milling and hay processing.

Kapunda has played host to the Kapunda Celtic Music Festival since 1976. Each year the town celebrates its Celtic heritage with concerts, dancing and pub sessions.

Kapunda can be reached directly from Adelaide, or via the more scenic route through the Barossa Valley.

The town has a primary school and a high school and has its own hospital, with more hospital services in Adelaide itself.

The town is in the state electoral district of Stuart, the federal Division of Wakefield, and is the centre of the Light Regional Council.
