R&H Suburb Profile SUNBURY

Sunbury is a regional city located 39km north-west of Melbourne's CBD in the City of Hume. Statistically, Sunbury is considered part of Greater Melbourne.

Although Sunbury is currently a separate city, the Victorian government's 2009 decision to extend the urban growth boundary will likely see Sunbury absorbed by Melbourne's suburban expansion around 2020.

In the early 1970s the area (then largely rural) became famous in Australia as the site of the Sunbury Pop Festival, held annually from 1972 to 1975.

The demographics/culture of Sunbury up until the mid-1980s was predominantly white Anglo-Saxon and some other minor ethnic groups. Sunbury's residents now represent diverse cultural backgrounds, partly due to the working class background, and proximity to major manufacturing and transport hubs, with Melbourne Airport only 15km from the township.

Sunbury’s town centre is home to several supermarkets, department stores and a large national hardware store. There are also many food outlets and a cinema.

Sunbury Railway Station is connected to Melbourne by V/Line services on the Bendigo train line. These services are not as frequent as those on the metropolitan Metlink service — an approximate hourly frequency is provided on weekdays, although weekends services levels can be infrequent. The State Government has announced that the line to Sunbury will be electrified, bringing suburban-standard services to the town.

Local schools include Sunbury Primary School, Sunbury West Primary School, Sunbury Heights Primary School, Killara Primary School, Kismet Primary School, St Anne's Primary School, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Primary School and Goonawarra Primary School. Secondary schools include Sunbury College (formerly Sunbury Secondary College, Sunbury High School), Sunbury Downs College (formerly Sunbury Post-primary School) and Salesian College, Rupertswood. Other educational facilities include the Sunbury and Macedon Ranges Special School and Victoria University, Sunbury Campus.

Popular sports and recreational activities include AFL, badminton, basketball, lawn bowls, cricket, dancing, golf, horse riding, soccer, swimming, tennis, rugby league, Scouts and Girl Guides.

Sunbury has its own private hospital, with public hospitals in neighbouring areas.
