R&H Suburb Profile ST HUBERTS ISLAND

St Huberts Island is a canal estate and suburb of the Central Coast region of New South Wales, Australia connected to the mainland at Daleys Point. It is part of the City of Gosford local government area.

Services on ‘The Island’ include five reserves, picnic areas and a large children’s playground in Attunga Close. There is also a public boat ramp in Luderick Avenue.

St Huberts Island has a special place in history as one of the first locations visited by First Fleeters after the settlement was established at Sydney Cove. Needing to find more arable land and water for farming purposes, Captain Arthur Phillip travelled north in the hope that the “Broken Bay” referred to in Captain Cook’s log book would be the entrance to a river.

In the early 1830s, the twin islands of St Huberts and Rileys were offered for sale by the Government with apparently little interest. Father Cornelius Coughlan, a member of the Dominican Order, took advantage of the “New Land Regulations” which declared that land offered for sale and not bid for, could be claimed without competition. He paid 154 pounds and 10 shillings for his purchase.

Father Coughlan served as parish priest to the Brisbane Water District, rowing across the water to his various congregations. He is believed to have given his island the name St Huberts. Today, the residents of St Huberts Island celebrate St Huberts day each year with a lunch gathering on the reserve in Long Arm Parade.

In 1906, the land was bought by the Assistant Accountant of the Bank of NSW who engaged a surveyor who started the process of sub dividing the whole island.

On 14 June 1974, the Rip Bridge was opened finally providing a road link to the mainland and easy access to Woy Woy Railway station.

Today St Huberts Island has become one of the most desirable residential locations in the district.

Surrounding suburbs include: Daleys Point, Empire Bay, Bensville, Ettalong Beach, Booker Bay, Blackwall, Woy Woy, Woy Woy Bay, Horsfield Bay, Phegans Bay, Umina Beach, St Huberts Island, Pearl Beach, Patonga Beach, Koolewong. The town of St Huberts Island is only a short drive to the popular towns of Terrigal & Avoca Beach.
