LOVING OUR ST GEORGE AND BOTANY BAY WATERWAYS

Enjoy the great outdoors along the Georges River amid fantastic national parks and stunning riverside scenes. If you live in the St Georges region and you love the water, then exploring this stunning area is going to be right up your alley.

We are sailing...

Ever dreamed of going sailing as you watched boats out on the bay with envy? In this region we’re blessed with sailing schools and clubs with some excellent restaurants. One of them might be just what you’re looking for.

The Botany Bay Yacht Club is a well-established sailing facility offering a range of services to its visitors. This school is popular for the sailing lessons it offers to adults and children of all ages. As well, the club has a regular racing calendar, and newcomers are welcome.

For a river vibe, check out the Georges River Sailing Club. Whether you’re a child, a teenager or an adult, you’ll find a sailing class to suit. And once you’re proficient, you might join a racing team on Saturdays and Sundays, join in endurance sailing or get wet and wild on the small yachts. After you’ve had a good day out on the water, this club continues to deliver. Enjoy the 180-degree views over the Georges River and Botany Bay from the bar while indulging in a beverage or two. At Edge bistro, salivate over Garlic Butter Moreton Bay Bugs, Lamb Souvlaki, Western Australia Rock Lobster or vegetarian Zucchini and Roasted Pumpkin Risotto. If none of these appeal, you’re sure to find a new favourite from the extensive menu.

Messing about in (motor) boats

If you’re looking for an activity with more of an edge to it than sedate sailing on the quiet waters around the bay, you might find St Georges Motor Boat Club more your style.  Here, members enjoy as much entertainment off the water as they do on it. Apart from boating, members can participate in many activities from bus trips to special events.

Your basic needs are catered to, with food and drink available from 7.30am. The pet-friendly Bay Breeze Café overlooking Kogarah Bay is open for breakfast and lunch. Check out the pooch menu or their delectable cocktails. Marina Edge spoils its visitors with half-price oysters every Tuesday, and other daily specials.

Kayaking and rowing

Kayaking and rowing are also popular water sports along the river, but be prepared to bring your own equipment with you because it is not always easy to find somewhere that hires it. Inflatable kayaks and dinghies can be a great solution if you live in a small apartment without a garage or storage space.

When it comes to rowing any type of craft, instead of rowing in the bay why not paddle up the Cooks River and take in the superb scenery while you’re at it? If you’re not keen on heading along the river alone, you could join in a flat water tour with the River Canoe Club or try out some of their specialist classes.

Fishing

Georges River fishing exists to slow down time, and we are definitely not short of great fishing spots along this river. Check out georgesriver.org.au for some valuable information about where you can fish. Remember that restrictions apply to certain areas so be sure to check first.

All of this water activity means that we are going to require marinas to dock our boats in. Fortunately, there are many dotted around the Georges River. Here are some of some to consider:

Como Marina. Set in the scene of historic buildings, this marina also hires out and sells boats. It has two slipways that can handle boats approximately 50 ft long.

Lugarno Marina is pleasantly presented and has recently been upgraded. This marina is set in a peaceful, residential setting and its friendly service has been noted in reviews by its patrons.

Blakehurst Marina is perfectly situated at a key point of the Georges River, available to cater for boats moving further inland or those simply moving around the bay and enjoying the silent, still waters. Facilities such as secure car parking, toilets, showers and casual berthing make this marina a convenient stop.
