Here in Australia, there are many inspiring designers who create beautiful prints for all our homes. However in our top 3 sits Yorkelee Prints- an online store that specialises in designing gorgeously unique art prints for your home. Every space from the lounge, bedroom and kids room is catered for. We've been following Yorkelee's journey for a couple years now & we'll just put it out there,  Instagrams as inspiring as theirs are hard to come by. With 114k followers, you only have to visit it to understand what the hype is about.  

But more inspiring to this, is who's behind it....

Kate Fenning (we love her! she'll make you laugh & has a no BS attitude that is so refreshing to see on social media) owner & founder had the belief that everyone should be able to have a stylish home if they want one. She noticed a gap in the market for high end, thoughtfully designed, AFFORDABLE prints. That was the issue, there were art prints out there, but they were so very pricey! With a background in graphic design, marketing & advertising, after having her two boys, Kate set out to 1. Have a better work-life balance 2. Wake up every day doing two of her favourite things, spending time with her kids and creating art that also wouldnt break the bank. 

We had a chat to Kate about her home, advice she has for other mums out there wanting to start something of their own, how she stays motivated and keeps a balanced lifestyle and her favourite prints to style in kids bedrooms...

 

How do you style a happy, functional & stylish home for your growing family? 

I’m actually in the process of moving the studio to my apartment, to centralise everything and from there I’m looking into building my own container home/studio! Super excited about this idea, my personal life circumstances have changed over the past year, which has allowed me the opportunity to explore alternative building solutions for a new home/studio. 

I’m a huge believer in being solution orientated, so always being open to change and looking for ways to improve your environment. 

 

What you love to change & what remains the same….

I personally love mixing up prints, it’s an easy way to create a huge impact on a budget, you can instantly change the entire room by swapping over prints. I love finding innovative, creative ways to style spaces, like using magazine cutouts and sticking those up for inspiration in your studio/office, looks great, easily changed and you have constant visual inspo when you need. I’m also a huge fan of cushions, so I’m always on the lookout for new cushions, again a really easy way to add colour or change the style of a room easily and affordably. 

 

Where did your career journey begin? And what advice do you have for other mums out there who want to start something of their own…

I believe in doing what you’re passionate about, if it’s fun and you enjoy it, then it’s the right job for you. You want to get up every day looking forward to what you’re doing it, getting excited for new ideas and opportunities. Yorkelee started from my passion for styling and design, I loved styling the house and the boys room and couldn’t find any prints that I liked to go in their rooms, so a friend suggested I create my own. I feel the best businesses grow organically from a ‘need’ that fills a gap in the marketplace and creates excitement and inspiration for customers in some way.

 

How you keep yourself motivated and maintain a balanced lifestyle…

This is a really good question - I didn’t have very good balance a year ago…. up until then I worked A LOT, didn’t leave much time for myself or anything else. I believe you have to take care of yourself first and everything else balances out. I started at a new gym that focuses on mental, physical and emotional health, meditating (yes I became a hippie lol) eating properly, allowing time for others and it slowly improved. When you’re passionate about what you do, it’s easy to get caught up in it and think you have to ‘do everything yourself’ instead of constantly looking for easier more innovative solutions for your business, and acting on those ideas. Once you have balance, the inspiration and ideas flow. 

 

Tell us about your favourite prints for styling in your kids bedrooms...  

I love love love our new animal illustration prints, created by our own designer, Alecia Chan, they’re super cute and could be styled in kids rooms or around the house.

The other print that is a MUST for kids rooms is our ‘I am worthy’ typography print, such an important message for all kids : )
