[2] NEXT FRIDAY 16TH March 9:00-11:45pm

HYPNOTIC BRASS ENSEMBLE  @ HOWLER 7-10 Dawson St, Brunswick

If you ask us, theres no better way to start our weekend than watching a live act at Howler on a Friday night. Especially when it’s going to be Hypnotic Brass Ensemble- blood brothers from the south side of Chicago.

If you haven’t heard of them before they’re the seven sons of jazz great Phil Cohran. The “Bad Boys of Jazz” spend most of their time on the road touring and have brought the brass with greats including Prince, Mos Def, Mick Jones (The Clash) and Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz), to name a few. In demand, they have graced the stages of Coachella, WOMADelaide, The Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall and more. The documentary Brothers Hypnotic explored their music, work ethic, life and experience being raised by a jazz legend father. Their song War exploded in the blockbuster film The Hunger Games.

[3] NEXT MONDAY 12TH March 9:00-10:30pm

MASTA ACE @ THE JAZZLAB  27 Leslie St, Brunswick

Masta Ace has achieved so much, influenced so many and has remained relevant since 1988. With a special band for the jazz edit, get up close and personal for one night only at The Jazzlab. With nothing but foldback between Ace and the audience, this is one for the fans. A night of feel-good vibes and lyrical flow so good, you won’t want it to end. Experience the raw talent of an artist, one of the last true luminaries of a hip hop era gone by, who has ridden the ebbs and flows of a scene where so many have come and gone.

[4] NEXT WEDNESDAY 14TH March 7:30-11:00pm

DAYME AROCENA @ HOWLER 7-10 Dawson St, Brunswick

Now when we first heard Dayme’s voice we literally got shivers.

Singer, composer and choir leader Daymé Arocena is a shining star who has turned heads from a young age. Born into the lively intertwining musical legacies of her native Cuba, she approaches jazz, soul and classical with an innate sense of rhythm. The reception to her music spurred a whirlwind of opportunities and supporters and her much-lauded second album, Cubafonía, gave her free rein to work with her choice of Cuba’s best musicians. Supported by Havana Cultura and catapulted onto the world stage, two years of touring has seen her look even further outwards, collecting broader influences that add to the rich hybrid she brings to her musical milieu.

It’s a FREE event so we’ll be packing a picnic, getting our family & friend together to catch headline act, the electrifying nine-piece soul outfit Saskwatch. They’ll be joined by the tailor-made calypso goodness of Mighty Duke and the Lords. Also performing are Afro hip hop funksters Cool Out Sun and A.YA on Japanese instruments in a Taiko explosion.
