What colours will the best dressed houses be wearing this spring on rh.com.au?

September 21, 2018

It looks like “50 shades of (dark) grey” could be the blockbuster for home exteriors this spring, as the popularity of grey colour palettes continues to gain momentum. Home owners are becoming bolder with their choice of greys, and this season we’re starting to see the use of darker shades including charcoals and even near-blacks.

The beauty of a grey-themed colour scheme is that it provides the perfect backdrop for all seasons, while offering lots of opportunities to add a burst of colour with a brightly painted front door. Grey tones also blend beautifully with the silver greens of many native plants, and of course, home owners can add an extra show of colour with pots of spring blooms in tones of pinks, reds and purples.

Spring 2018 is also seeing a rise in the popularity of warm, earthy tones including tans and terracotta. These too form the ideal backdrop for colourful spring flowers, and can easily be blended with home accessories including garden art.

If you’re planning to list your home this spring, it always pays to remember that curb appeal carries considerable weight – and as the saying goes, you only get one chance at a good impression. If you’re unsure how your home will look in a particular shade, plenty of tools are available that can make the choice easier. Taubmans has an online ‘paint visualiser’ that lets you upload a photo of your home, which can then be seen in a variety of colours, or check out the Dulux Colour Visualiser.

While your choice of exterior paint colour can be a way to express your individuality, if you’re dressing your home for sale it can pay to err on the conservative side. Be especially mindful if you have a character home. Buyers often love to see these older residences sporting traditional heritage colours, and many paint manufacturers have colour ranges specifically designed for different architectural styles.

If in doubt, speak with your local Raine & Horne team. They can provide valuable insights into what buyers in your area are looking for, and this can be a good starting point in your choice of colour palette.
