New research tell us that Australians are happy to dive right into domestic life, with more than 55% indicating that they would move in with their significant other within 12 months of dating.

One in 10 people said that they would only consider co-habitation with their partner once they were married, suggesting that old traditions are still alive for some.

Our survey tells us that two-thirds (66%) of Australians would rather set up an entirely new home with their partner than try merge into one property or the other.

That’s a fact

Georgina Hewitt, 28, and fiancé Michael, 32, made the decision to move in to Michael’s house after only six months of dating.

“We were spending so much time together anyway, that it made sense for us to save on rent by living together. I moved into Michael’s share house in East Melbourne for around a year before we moved into our own place in Alphington, VIC”, explains Georgina.

The situation worked out happily for the duo, with Michael proposing to Georgina shortly after and the couple are now busy looking to buy a house together.

Is a housemate a potential life mate?

Good news for the single folks this Valentine’s Day – true love could be closer than you thought. Nearly a third of Australians (28%) revealed in our survey that they’d consider hooking up with a housemate.

Men in particular are happy to keep the relationship close to home, with 35% indicating that they would consider dating a housemate. Tread carefully however, as 11% of Aussies claim they have hooked up with a housemate in the past – and wouldn’t go there again.
