Big name players in Cairns Tennis International

To kick off the brand new Cairns International Tennis Centre, residents of the Cairns region will have the chance watch pro tennis greats, live and up close, in a week-long series of free admission matches.

From 3-11 September, the Cairns International Pro Tournament will give tennis fans the opportunity to see pros ply their on-court skills. Free admission to the matches is daily from 8am, and each evening under lights from 5pm.

The tournament boasts big names including New Zealand Davis Cup representative Daniel King-Turner, Australian Olivia Rogowska, and junior Wimbledon runner-up Ben Mitchell.

Mayor Val Schier said the event was an exciting start to three weeks of great tennis, as the Davis Cup would take place the following week.

“The International showcases the new centre and involves residents in a week of community focused tennis events,” Cr Schier said.

“People can come along and watch well known players from around the world, free or charge.”

Prize money for the Pro International is substantial, offering $25,000 for women and $15,000 in the men’s competition.

The Mayor will officially welcome players, officials, delegates and visitors at an official launch celebration at the Court House Hotel this Sunday.

“The Cairns International Tournament schedule aims to reach the entire community through a week of inclusive special events.

"There will be a coaching day, lead by the great Evonne Goolagong, for aspiring indigenous girls visiting far northern communities and a coaching day for the region’s juniors,” Cr Schier said.
