Cairns to host Local Government women 2012
Cairns will welcome women from across Queensland when it plays host to the annual Women in Local Government Conference in 2012.
Councillors Di Forsyth and Julia Leu presented a convincing case for Cairns as a host city for the annual event in 2012 at the Queensland chapter of the Australian Local Government Women’s Association (ALGWA) event in Gympie in late July.
Cr Forsyth said the vote for Cairns by participants at the ALGWA Queensland annual general meeting was unanimous.
“Our team presented a spectacular presentation that was developed in collaboration with Cairns Convention Centre staff and we were thrilled by the response of members,” Cr Forsyth said.
“The annual event highlights the numerous roles women play in local government and provides a platform for women to raise issues and gain knowledge of all levels of governance.”
“It is great that we have been able to win this for Cairns especially in this year
of Women in Local Government.”
Cr Leu said ALWGA members she spoke with were looking forward to all the wonderful activities the Cairns region has to offer.
“This will be a great economic benefit to the region,” Cr Leu said.
"Many members and their families are already making plans to holiday before and after the conference with visits to other areas such as Cassowary Coast, Tablelands, Cooktown and Torres Strait.”
The 2012 ALGWA Women in Local Government Conference is to be held in late July at the Cairns Convention Centre.
