Council to auction off homes over unpaid rates

The Port Douglas and Mossman Gazette today reported that a Cow Bay property will go under the hammer at auction because of massive unpaid rates debts.  Michael Mathews wo owns the property has not paid rates for 15 years and is the region's worst unpaid rates offender.

Mr Mathews' property is one of four properties going under the hammer on 24th August for the same offence.  Mr Mathews' partner explained that no mains power runs to the house as had been promised by council, and no bridge over the Daintree river was a deterent to anyone wanting to buy the property.
