Douglas region experiences population surge

Population in the Douglas region surged last year by more than it has in a single year during the past decade, reports the Gazette this week.

State Government statistics have revealed the local population grew 3.2% to the year ending 2009.

The figure represents an additional 370 people who now call the area from Cape Tribulation to Oak Beach home, taking the total population to nearly 12,000.

The increase can be attributed to a combination of births and people moving to the area for sand, sunsunshine and a relaxed lifestyle.
