Flying fox summit and expo

Batman, the character who successfully blended bat and human, will be the icon to the first Flying Fox Summit and Expo to be held on Friday.

Open to the public, the day long event will feature zoologists and ecologists collaborating and sharing expert knowledge on flying foxes and their interaction with humans.

An evening showing of Batman the Movie (1966 version) in the City Place will round out the Friday the 13th events dedicated to understanding tropical bats

Cairns Regional Council will host the summit that will bring together wildlife experts, community stakeholders, council staff and local, state and federal government agencies to exchange and discuss accurate information and experiential knowledge on flying foxes.

Mayor Val Schier, who will open the conference, said flying foxes and their habitat will be subjects examined in depth.

“Council has invited experts who will speak on bat behaviour and ecology, human health issues associated with flying foxes and case studies that will provide insight for management of our winged friends in urban areas.

“The aim of the Summit is to increase awareness of the flying fox’s place in the ecological scheme of things and to provide the community with up to date research and current legislation,” Cr Schier said.

The Summit program, that runs from 8:30am-3:30pm, includes speakers from CSIRO, Royal Melbourne Botanic Gardens, Biosecurity Queensland, DEWHA, DEEWAR, several local governments and a fruit farmer

“After the Summit closes, Council will hold an Expo in the courtyard at the Cairns City Library that is designed as a one stop shop for information and advice on flying foxes.”

To officially open the expo, the Mayor will unveil a new Flying Fox interpretive sign adjacent to the flying fox roost at the Cairns City Library.

“The sign is designed to deliver information to locals and visitors. It carries illustrations and information about the bats that roost in the trees near the Library,” Cr Schier said.

“To wind up the day, we will all have some fun watching the original Batman movie. Batman successfully united bats and humans for the good of all. That is the aim of our Summit and Expo.”
