PDSLSC fights for survival against rates charges

Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club is fighting for its financial survival against a massive $11,000 rates bill.  Despite being given a $4000 reprieve, the club is still expected to pay $11,000 for the year 2010/11.  The club cannot possibly come up with that sort of cash without dipping in to building funds, said club officials.  Division 10 councillor Julia Leu said the rates bill was a huge impost on a small community sports club, and unrealistic for the club to pay such an amount.  Under Douglas Shire Council the club paid less than $2000 per annum.  Club officials are not looking forward to an annual fight with the council against these huge and unsustainable charges.
