Search for Australia Day heroes
Residents who know an unsung hero or inspiring leader are urged to submit a nomination for Cairns Regional Council's 2011 Citizen of the Year Awards.
Mayor Val Schier will this week launch the annual appeal, designed to honour residents from across the region who work to enrich the lives of others.
“Every year council asks people to put forward someone they know who has worked selflessly to help others or has taken great leadership – someone who is a great example of what it is to be Australian, Cr Schier said.
"We know there are extraordinary people out there held in great esteem by the community. We ask people to take the initiative and complete a form to nominate someone they know who inspires them, someone who through their efforts has made a real difference to the community.
“Council is celebrating 125 years of local government this year, making this year’s award even more special.”
Nominations are invited from individuals for the categories of Citizen of the Year, Junior Citizen of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Sportsperson of the Year and a Cultural Award for the Arts.
Nominees must be residents of the Cairns Regional Council area. Lodgements close Friday, December 3.
“Individuals can qualify for nomination in any field of endeavour – the arts, education, community work or business. Council will honour winners on Australia Day in January,” Cr Schier said.
Winner of the 2009 Citizen of the Year, Todd Hartley and 2010 winner Stan Jensen, will join the Mayor in launching this year’s awards.
