Sunday wage rises set to hit hospitality industry

The Port Douglas and Mossman Gazette reported this week that new Sunday working penalty rates could hit opening times of local eateries.  Federal government penalty rates increased by 8% in July and public holiday pay rates increased by 10%.  Di Sassi of Sassi's Cantina in Grant Street commented that, as Port Douglas is a 7 days a week society, we must make the most of the busy season while it lasts.  The rates on Saturday and Sunday are exorbitant, and are expected to force the closure of some eateries as their profit margin is squeezed too tightly.
