Wonga beach development causes uproar

Cairns Regional Council went against its own planning rules this week when granting approval for a residential sub division in Wonga.  The site is a sensitive wetland area and approval was given for developer Jeff McCloy to develop 39 hectairs despite serious problems forseen by locals.  Road congestion, damage to roads, flooding issues, inadequate sewage and poor water quality and pressure would make large scale housing development untenable.  Original development plans included a major tourist resort including 30 dormitories, 42 three storey  units, 120 single storey bungalow cabins and 81 units.  Plans have varied since initial consultation in 2008.
