Adelaide Hill, Oakbank Area

Oakbank is an attractive town settled on the banks of the Onkaparinga River circa 1840. The town is surrounded by picturesque big gum rural land in the Adelaide Hills, about 23km east of Adelaide in South Australia.

The wider Adelaide Hills Region provides a great lifestyle and is only 30 minutes drive from Adelaide’s CBD.

Oakbank, with its colourful historic past and relaxing atmosphere, is also the site of the biggest picnic race meeting in the southern hemisphere, the Oakbank Easter Racing Carnival.

The town is home to two historic breweries, one circa 1843 and still owned by the J & AG Johnston family (South Australia’s oldest family company, who settled Oakbank), now selling cordials and soft drinks together with property development hotels and vineyard interests. The other former Pikes brewery (circa 1886) is now home to the Oakbank Weaver, where hand-woven textiles and tapestries are produced on large looms.

Oakbank Heritage Walk takes in a variety of historic sights including a 130-year-old oak tree listed on the National Trust’s Register of Significant Trees. There’s also a nine-hole golf course, said to be one of the best of its kind in the country.

The wider Adelaide Hills are home to boutique wineries, country markets, art galleries and charming villages. The region is known for bed and breakfast country cottages, perfect for romantic weekends away, cosy hotel meals, scenic drives and nature walks
