CREATING A KERBSIDE APPEAL

If the Orange Botanic Gardens are anything to go by, you can create beautiful gardens to boost your home’s kerbside appeal, and without breaking the bank. Kerbside appeal is not only an effective tool when selling your property, but plants can make your home look more polished and can even reduce stress and anxiety. A 2020 study done by UTS found plants brought a 37% reduction in tension ad anxiety, a 58% in depression and 44% reduction in anger and hostility. So, what better reason to get your green thumb on!

Frost-proof natives

Amber Velvet, or Velvet Kangaroo Paws need full sun but are low maintenance and can be in pots or gardens. The Aussie Flat Bush is a great shrub to cover the ground and can thrive in full sun to light shade. For some colour, the Aussie Rambler is a native ground cover option with beautiful pink flowers. It thrives in the same conditions as the Aussie Flat Bush. We also love the Correa reflexa, a beautiful low maintenance option, which attracts honey eating birds.

To add some height, banksias, grevilleas, eucalyptus, hakeas, and callistemons thrive in cold conditions and will attract beautiful native birds and wildlife.

For some colour

Azaleas are a diverse and hearty range of flowers, with different colours to select from, they will provide beautiful flowers come springtime. The Nandina domestica is a bright red hedge that produces new red growth in spring and autumn. Requiring full sun to moderate shade, it can get to 70cm high. Agapanthus are known for their beautiful flowers in Spring, but they are also a frost-proof way to get your garden prepared in winter.

Grow your food

While it’s not recommended to plant new crops in winter, it is a great time to lift, divide and replant rhubarb, asparagus, horseradish, and globe artichoke. You can prepare broad beans, onions, spinach, silverbeet and rainbow chard indoors and get them ready to plant in your garden in early spring. However, if you’re organised you could be already harvesting cabbage and cauliflower, broccoli and broccolini, brussels sprouts, kale, silverbeet and winter lettuce.

While we patiently await seeing the success of your winter planting, you can catch us at Botanical Gardens. If you have any questions about boosting your house’s kerbside appeal for sale or lease, please reach out to anyone in our team.
