The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will commence slope rehabilitation and geotechnical works on the Captain Cook Highway at Yule Point from Monday 30 November 2020, weather permitting.

A recent inspection of the slope at this location identified important rehabilitation works are required. The works will involve the removal of large rocks and stabilisation of the roadside by installing wire rope net and mesh.

This project will improve safety for road users by reinforcing the slopes, reducing the risk of rocks falling onto the road surface, and mitigating the effects of embankment erosion at this location.

Crews will be onsite between 6 am and 6 pm, and the works are expected to take up to 10 weeks to complete, weather permitting.

For the safety of workers and road users, there will be changed traffic conditions while the works are carried out. Temporary speed limit reductions will be in place from 6 am and single lane operation under coordination of traffic controllers from 9 am. Road users should expect minor delays during single lane operation and plan their journeys accordingly.

Several intermittent full closures of the road will be required each day throughout the works to carry out scaling, cleaning and the removal of large rocks. Road users should expect delays of up to 20 minutes during these full closures. The contractor will monitor traffic queuing lengths during these times and allow traffic through the work area as soon as possible, when it is safe to do so.

Slope rehabilitation works were last carried out at Yule Point in June 2018.

Variable Message Signs (VMS) will be in place on the approaches to the work site to ensure motorists are aware of the changed traffic conditions. Changes in dates due to poor weather will be posted on the VMS.

Nearby residents may experience noise associated with the roadworks, such as trucks, heavy machinery and vibrations during the works.
