R&H Suburb Profile IMBIL

Imbil is a town in the Sunshine Coast hinterland of Queensland. It falls in the Gympie Regional Council local government area and in the Mary River valley, 160km north of Brisbane. At the 2006 census, Imbil had a population of 469.

Imbil is a 48km drive south-west of Gympie and is announced by orderly, hillside pineapple plantations. A steep haul to the Imbil Lookout presents incomparable, near 360-degree views to Kenilworth, the mountains, and the Sunshine Coast. A 26 kilometre round-trip through forest and cultivated creek flats embraces Lake Borumba, perfectly suited to swimming, boating, water-skiing and fishing. A nearby hatchery breeds golden perch and silver perch, which are released into the local waterways as fingerlings.

Imbil is the terminus for the weekly Sunday run from Gympie by the famous Mary Valley Rattler. The beautifully restored steam locomotive No 45 and its carriages maintain the steam tradition on a railway line originally surveyed in the 1880s. On the 80km return journey, passengers are treated to magnificent scenery as the train snakes its way through creek-networked valleys.

Imbil Four Square has fuel, auto needs and batteries, an ATM, groceries, fruit and vegetables and fishing Permits. Restaurants can be found in nearby Gympie.

Imbil has two primary schools (Imbil State School and Mary Valley State College Primary School), with more primary and secondary schools in nearby Gympie and other nearby towns.

The town is served by Gympie Hospital.
