R&H Suburb Profile MURGON
Murgon is a town situated on the Bunya Highway 270km north-west of Brisbane. It is in the region of Queensland known as the South Burnett, the southern part of the Burnett River catchment.
Murgon is a thriving centre of the South Burnett's cattle and pork industries, one of the twin hubs of the South Burnett wine industry (the other is at Kingaroy, 45km south) and a centre of the State's emerging olive-growing industry. Other industries include peanuts, dairy farming, beef and cattle production and wine.
Murgon is a relaxed, friendly country town that has all the amenities of a larger centre, including restaurants, cafes, accommodation, golf club, bowling club and RSL. There is also a supermarket, convenience stores, retail and craft outlets, a 24-hour petrol station, heated swimming pool and a large conference, convention and sporting centre.
Attractions include winemaking, fishing on nearby Bjelke-Petersen Dam and gem-fossicking. Murgon is also close to a famous fossil site. The Murgon Fossil Site is the only fossil site with a diverse vertebrate fauna dating to around 55 million years ago, about 10 million years after the extinction of the dinosaurs.
Major annual events include the Murgon Show (March), the Dairy Heritage Festival (June), the Shakin' Grape Wine Festival (October) and the Christmas Carnival (December).
