R&H Suburb Profile CHARLESTOWN

Charlestown is a suburb of Newcastle, NSW, and the largest town within the City of Lake Macquarie. It is 10km west-southwest of Newcastle’s CBD and an easy 40 min drive from the Hunter Valley and Central Coast.

Charlestown has all the amenities and services of a big town but has retained a holiday atmosphere, flanked by beaches and mountains.

The area is rapidly growing and has one of the largest business centres within the Lake Macquarie city.  Higher density housing is beginning to appear. The suburb is home to one of the largest shopping complexes in the region, Charlestown Square, located just off the Pacific Highway. Charlestown serves as the district's transport hub.

There are three state primary schools (Charlestown Primary, Charlestown South Primary and Charlestown East Primary) and Catholic Diocese's St Joseph's Convent Primary School. The state primary schools feed into nearby Whitebridge High School, while the catholic school feeds into nearby St Mary's High School at Gateshead and St Pius X High School at Adamstown.

Charlestown has a police station, fire brigade and ambulance station. Hospitals servicing the area include John Hunter Hospital, Warners Bay Private, Lake Macquarie Private and Newcastle Private.

Charlestown residents enjoy sailing and other water sports on the largest coastal saltwater lake in the southern hemisphere. There is also a thriving café culture.
