Haymarket is at the southern end of Sydney’s CBD in the local government area of the City of Sydney. It is home to Chinatown and Railway Square and adjacent to Darling Harbour. Surrounding suburbs include Ultimo, Chippendale, Surry Hills, and the CBD.

Sydney's produce markets were located in Haymarket from the early 20th century to the 1980s when they were moved to at Flemington. Paddy's Markets still operate on part of the site as a produce and flea market. The Market City complex contains the markets, The Peak apartment building, and a modern shopping centre featuring a food court, fresh produce, restaurants, boutiques, specialty shops and cinemas.

Haymarket is linked to the city centre by bus, monorail and train and is a stop on the light rail service. Central railway station, the arrival point of interstate, regional and suburban trains and coaches, is on the southern border. The Sydney Entertainment Centre is located in Haymarket between Paddy's Market and Darling Harbour. Building 5 of the University of Technology is also in Haymarket.

Haymarket is home to Sydney's Chinatown, filled with food halls, noodle bars and grocers specialising in genuine Asian cuisine. The spirited Spanish Quarter is the place to sip Sangria, try tapas and watch or participate in traditional Flamenco dancing. Haymarket is within walking distance of the Sydney Entertainment Centre, The Capitol Theatre, Darling Harbour and the Powerhouse Museum.

Local primary schools include Ultimo Public, Glebe Public and Forest House Public. Secondary students attend Sydney Secondary College, Southern Cross High School, Sydney International High School and Cleveland Street High School. The University of Technology and Sydney University are also nearby. Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney Hospital and St Vincent's Hospital service Haymarket.

Haymarket and surrounding suburbs house gyms, tennis courts, playing fields, swimming pools, ten pin bowling alleys and walking trails. The Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre in Ultimo is a popular indoor recreation facility. Other popular sporting venues nearby include the Sydney Football Stadium, Sydney Cricket Ground, Moore Park Golf Club, Randwick Racecourse and Centennial Park.
