PREVENT MOULD IN YOUR HOME THIS BUILD UP

The wet weather and humidity experienced across the Top End in the build up & wet season sets you up with the ideal conditions for mould growth around the home. We've put together some useful tips to help reduce moisture in your home and prevent the growth of mould:

  • open your windows on dry and sunny days
  • leave a pedestal or ceiling fan on to promote airflow
  • keep the window open and turn on an exhaust fan when bathing or showering, and close the bathroom door to stop moisture escaping
  • vacuum, dust, and clean kitchens & bathrooms
  • regularly open wardrobes to air out clothing items
  • avoid hanging wet clothes in living areas & bedrooms
  • ensure clothes dryers are properly ventilated and clean the filter regularly
  • invest in a dehumidifier

To clean mould off home surfaces, it is best to use white vinegar diluted with water (1 part vinegar:4 parts water). Try to avoid bleach as it can create toxic fumes and discolour or stain surfaces before adequately removing the mould.

Some moulds can be dangerous to the health of you and your family. If you find mould in your rental, do your best to treat it and let your Property Manager know as soon as possible to prevent spreading.
