Raine & Horne Foundation pledges $20,000 to support aid efforts in Turkey (Türkiye)

February 14, 2023
  • The Raine & Horne Foundation is donating $20,000 to Care Australia to assist those tragically impacted by the recent earthquake in Turkey (Türkiye).
  • More than 30,000 people have reportedly died since the first powerful 7.8 magnitude quake struck with tens of thousands injured.

Sydney, NSW (14 February 2023) The Raine & Horne Foundation has today pledged $20,000 in financial support to CARE Australia for people affected by the devastating earthquakes in southern Türkiye.

The Raine & Horne Foundation is the Raine & Horne network’s philanthropic organisation. Over the past 12 months, the Foundation has raised almost $500,000 for several community causes, including Dignity, the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation.

Scope of the crippling crisis

More than 30,000 people have reportedly died since the first powerful 7.8 magnitude quake struck Turkey and Syria just over a week ago, with tens of thousands injured.

Tragically, many survivors are struggling to secure shelter in freezing winter conditions in Turkey and Syria. According to the Turkish government, 380,000 people have sought refuge in government shelters or hotels.

In Turkey, thousands of buildings are rubble, including schools and health centres. At the same time, vital infrastructure such as sanitation and water supplies are also severely damaged. For those in Syria, this tragedy follows 12 years of civil war.

“This is an unfortunate and distressing event, and my thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones, including those from Turkey living in Australia,” said Mr Angus Raine, Executive Chairman, Raine & Horne.

“Our thoughts are also with the injured as well as people of Turkish heritage in Australia waiting anxiously for news.

“With humanitarian need only expected to grow in Turkey, the financial support of $20,000 from The Raine & Horne Foundation for CARE Australia will help funnel urgent aid to people struggling to survive.”

Mr Raine continued, “We are part of a global community, and this support recognises we are thinking of the people in Turkey who are facing very significant challenges to their survival.”

CARE has worked in Turkey since 1959 and is responding to the earthquake tragedy by working with partners and local municipalities to urgently deliver tents, mattresses, blankets, food, drinking water, baby items and warm clothing to as many families as possible.
