Earlwood

Earlwood is fast becoming a popular choice among first home buyers and young families who have been priced out of the inner western suburbs and are seeking extra space and good value for money. This area is known for its rich multicultural background and there are many attractions with vast parklands along the Cooks River, sporting facilities, fine delicatessens, quality schools and a relaxed suburban lifestyle that is virtually free from aircraft noise. Located just nine kilometres south-west of Sydney's CBD, it also offers excellent convenience to the airport, southern suburbs and vibrant inner west life.

History

Originally known as Parkes Camp after the land was granted to timber logger John Parkes in 1827, the area later become known as Parkestown, then Forest Hill around 1905-06. The name Earlwood was applied in 1918 - 'Earl' after a former mayor of Canterbury and 'Wood', the name of two brothers who owned a pig and poultry farm on Wolli Creek.

Early European migrants in the mid-20th century helped to shape the character of Earlwood and brought with them the delectable ethnic food culture and many produce stores that are enjoyed by locals and visitors to this day.

Real Estate & Design

One of the major reasons buyers move to Earlwood is because of the sizeable suburban houses on substantial blocks of land. The price of a two-bedroom flat in Newtown can buy a freestanding bungalow with its own garden, and lots of original character thrown in. There is a mix of Federation style homes, traditional Californian bungalows, 1960s brick dwellings and contemporary residences. Many have been renovated to reflect a modern lifestyle but some buyers are lucky enough to pick up an untouched gem that they can adapt with their own creative touch. Apartments and townhouses are also plentiful and offer great low maintenance options for both owner-occupiers and investors.

Popular attractions

Homer Street is the main thoroughfare in Earlwood and is home to a range of specialty shops, fresh food providores and an increasing number of trendy cafés. Fitness conscious people are spoilt for choice with playing fields, cycleways, the velodrome and golf course all close by. Earlwood residents also have excellent access to public transport with regular buses to the city and easy access to neighbouring train stations including Bardwell Park, Dulwich Hill and Tempe. From Tempe, the CBD is only four stations away.
