R&H Suburb Profile TOORAK GARDENS
Toorak Gardens is an inner eastern suburb of Adelaide, SA about 2km east of the CBD. This tree-lined, wealthy suburb is in the local government area of the City of Burnside, on the doorstep of Adelaide’s distinctive public buildings, museums, galleries, parks and renowned restaurants. It is also close to stylish Burnside Village in neighbouring Glenside. Toorak Gardens is rectangular shaped and wholly urbanised.
The only shopping inside the suburb is at the corner of Greenhill and Portrush Roads. It is popular because of its close proximity to the Burnside Village complex. Graced with leafy courtyards and verandas, the Burnside complex houses more than 80 boutiques and specialty shops and is one of Adelaide’s prime shopping destinations.
Toorak Gardens residents strongly support the arts, which are centred on the Art and Craft Workshop, where artists and crafts people create in a building converted from an old water storage tank.
According to Australian Bureau of Statistics data, the population is highly educated, with more than 40% of residents holding a degree or diploma. Residents primarily use the car as a means of transport. A journey to the CBD by car would take less than five minutes. In their commute to work, only 5.8% of Toorak Gardens residents used public transport.
The not-for-profit Burnside War Memorial Hospital is located within the suburb and is the only community hospital in the City of Burnside. Being so close to the CBD, residents can choose from several primary and high schools.
Adelaide is known for its churches.
