R&H Suburb Profile MOUNT GRAVATT
Mount Gravatt is the name of both a major suburb of Brisbane and a prominent hill in this suburb. The suburb is in the city’s south-east and was one of Brisbane's largest before being divided into Mount Gravatt East, Upper Mount Gravatt and Mount Gravatt South (the latter was changed to Wishart in the early 1990s).
Mt Gravatt is about 8km from Brisbane’s CBD. Stand alone houses account for over 74% of all dwellings, units 23%. Mt Gravatt has many low-set chamferboard houses. Blocks tend to be quite large. The majority of dwellings, constructed in the 1940s, 50s and 60s, provide a contrast to the more recent Griffith University campus, shopping centres, schools and the new dedicated Busway providing direct access to the CBD.
Mount Gravatt is ideally situated for shopping and business. Garden City Shopping Centre is only a few kilometres away. Markets are held at the Mt Gravatt Showgrounds every Sunday. The showgrounds are an important centre for cultural and community activities and the site of the annual Mount Gravatt Show, an agricultural fair. The grounds are on Logan Road, opposite the mega-church, Hillsong Brisbane Campus.
Mt Gravatt itself is a natural landmark offering great city views. The surrounding forest is popular with bush walkers. Mount Gravatt Lookout is accessible via Shire Road, which winds its way past water towers up to the lookout carpark and a communications tower. There is also a large cave complex on a walking trail on the mountain’s southern slope.
Public transport is provided by bus services. The South East Busway is connected by a service from Mount Gravatt Central to the Busway terminal at Griffith University.
Local schools include Mount Gravatt State High School, Mount Gravatt State School, St Agnes Catholic Primary School, Griffith University (Mount Gravatt Campus) and Moreton and Mt Gravatt East TAFE institutions.
