R&H Suburb Profile NORTH MELBOURNE
North Melbourne is a suburb in Melbourne, 2km north-west of the CBD. Its local government areas are the Cities of Melbourne and Moonee Valley.
North Melbourne is noted for its Victorian architecture, eating and shopping areas, and warehouses and factories. Interesting buildings include the North Melbourne Town Hall and the Meat Market (now a craft centre), are the Curzon Street Church (now known as St Mark the Evangelist), St Mary's Anglican Church, and the ornate Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral built in 1963 on Dryburgh Street.
North Melbourne still retains much of its working class culture with nearly half the area still taken up by factories. The suburb retains an attraction to new arrivals through its proximity to the city, a location fronting onto the expansive Royal Park and the ubiquity of old Victorian-style terrace houses. There is a strong migrant mix, with families arriving from Somalia, Eritrea and other nations.
‘Spring Fling’ is an annual festival for North and West Melbourne. The North Melbourne Football Club is still active and plays in the national Australian football competition, the Australian Football League (AFL). While the club's football department and training sessions are based at its traditional home ground at Arden Street Oval, it has since moved its administrative facilities and home games to the larger Telstra Dome.
Public transport is comprehensive, with three tram routes, two train stations and a bus route. Major roads include Flemington Road, Elizabeth Street and Victoria Street.
North Melbourne residents are close to many hospitals including the Royal Children’s Hospital, Royal Melbourne Hospital, St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne, The Royal Melbourne Hospital - Royal Park Campus, St Vincent’s & Mercy Private Hospital and the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.
There are also many schools in and around the suburb.
