R&H Suburb Profile BERRI

Berri is a town in the Riverland region of SA, about 238kmnorth-east of Adelaide in the Berri Barmera Council local government area.

 It is a primarilyagricultural and viticultural town on the north bank of the Murray River and isthe original home of well known juice company Berri Ltd. It has a population ofabout 7500 and boasts a dry Mediterranean climate, with seasonal temperatures afew degrees above those of Adelaide.

Berri has more than 3000 hectares of irrigated orchards andhas become known as a fruit processing town, with a large percentage of cannedfruit and juice originating there. Secondary industries include fruit packing,fruit juice, and wine.

It is a multicultural area with a café and hotel on theriverside, a main street overlooking the river, and shopping facilities such asthe Riverland Plaza. There are several restaurants, many proudly featuringlocal produce. The town centre has a wide range of shops, with Riverland Plazanearby.

Berri has a pre-school, primary school, high school andspecial needs school. There is a private hospital in town, with more hospitalsin nearby Renmark, Loxton and Barmera and surrounding areas.

Access to Berri by is car is via the Sturt Highway fromAdelaide or Mildura, with several alternative routes from Adelaide. Coachestravel regularly between Berri, Barmera and Adelaide.

Popular sports include swimming, golf, cricket and hockey, whilethe river offers fishing, waterskiing and boating. There are floating wharfplatforms for boat and houseboat mooring. A public marina is on the riverfront,with boat-launch facilities opposite the caravan park.

The Berri Barmera local government area hosts several annualevents including a wine and food festival, rodeo, country music festival, Easterand Christmas activities, sheep dog trials, yachting regattas and field days.
