Douglas is a suburb of Townsville, 12km or 20 mins drive to the CBD. Though mainly residential, it is home to James Cook University and the Townsville Hospital.

Douglas is experiencing a residential boom, with student accommodation expansion projects at James Cook University and the establishmentof two housing estates in close proximity.

The Townsville area has a tropical climate but due to its geographical location, rainfall is not as high as elsewhere in the tropics. Residents of Douglas enjoy all that Townsville has to offer, including an eclectic mix of rainforest, reef, sandy beaches, outback bush and big city benefits. There are also numerous restaurants across the city.

The Strand is popular seaside foreshore in town, stretching 2.5km and offering views across Cleveland Bay to Magnetic Island. Magnetic Island, located in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, is a short ferry ride from the mainland.

Townsville Hospital is 1km from Douglas. It incorporates the Townsville General Hospital and Kirwan Hospital for Women, offering world class health care services in a state-of-the-art health care facility. Townsville Hospital is the largest hospital in provincial Australia and supports the local community as well as people in the north to Thursday Island and Papua New Guinea, west to Mount Isa, and south to Sarina.
