R&H Suburb Profile SWANSEA

Swansea is a locality and commercial centre at the entrance to Lake Macquarie from the Pacific Ocean in NSW, 27km south of Newcastle. It is part of the City of Lake Macquarie local government area.

Swansea's local industries are coal mining, of which there were once several small coal mines, fishing, boating, and tourism. There are also popular beaches. Many residents commute to Newcastle for work.

Located at the entrance of Lake Macquarie, Swansea offers both lakeside and coastal living. It is just 35 minutes south of Newcastle and is the southern terminus for Newcastle Buses.

The bridge that spans the Swansea Channel opens at various times of the day for yachts and vessels to access the lake.

Swansea's shopping centre is on the lake side of the Pacific Highway. Swansea town centre serves the local communities of Swansea, Swansea Heads, Caves Beach, Cams Wharf, Nords Wharf, and Catherine Hill Bay.

The newly named suburbs, Pinny Beach and Murrays Beach, are part of The Wallarah Peninsula Project, a one billion-dollar residential tourism development. The project has the potential to inject enormous growth opportunities into Swansea and surrounding areas.

As population increases, Swansea's unique coastal positioning is expected to lead to increased retail, commercial, and tourism investment.

The town has a library, supermarkets, shopping centres, registered clubs, financial institutions, petrol stations speciality shops and Pelican Marina. There are major development plans for the coastal mining village of Catherine Hill Bay.

Swansea has primary and high schools and is served by Belmont District Hospital, with other major hospitals in Newcastle.
