R&H Suburb Profile WHYALLA

Whyalla is located 396km northwest of Adelaide, South Australia, on the western shores of Spencer Gulf. It is the largest city in the region, known as the place 'where the outback meets the sea’.

With excellent education, shopping, fishing and boating, sporting and recreational facilities and more than 300 days of sunshine annually, it is an ideal place to live.

Whyalla City Council occupies an urban area of 41.5 square kilometres, while the total Local Government Area is approximately 1000sq km.

Shopping
Whyalla has some of the best shopping facilities outside of Adelaide. There are several precincts within the city offering a variety of specialty shops, services and large department stores.

Recreation
Recreation facilities include a craft village, Whyalla Health & Leisure Centre, health and fitness centres, Civic Park, bowling and golf.

Education
Whyalla has excellent educational facilities, including the state’s only non-Adelaide based university campus. Students can be educated from primary school to university without leaving the city.

Hospital and health services
Whyalla has a wide range of health and medical facilities. The Whyalla Hospital and Health Services Inc. is a modern, comprehensive health unit with integrated community, mental health, domiciliary care, palliative care and allied health teams (including physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech pathology). Additional wards include accident and emergency, surgical, theatre, women's and children's and high dependency unit.

The Whyalla region also has a selection of dentists, orthodontists, chiropractors, physiotherapists, optometrists and many other specialist health care providers.

There are more than a dozen general practitioners and three large pharmacies. There is also a Medicare office.

Aged care facilities include Yeltana, Copperhouse Court and Annie Lockwood Court providing a mixture of independent and assisted living. Amaroo Lodge also provides short term respite care.

Transport
City buses operate five and a half days a week, taxis 24 hours, seven days a week.

The region has a well-serviced airport, with flights to and from Adelaide seven days a week, taking approximately 45 minutes.

Coaches to and from the region operate seven days a week, and there are also several hire car companies.
