Campbelltown is 51km south-west of Sydney's CBD. It is the administrative centre for the local government area of the City of Campbelltown and a major commercial centre of south-western Sydney and the Macarthur region.

The main commercial area includes the Queen Street shopping strip, Campbelltown Mall, Campbelltown railway station and bus interchange and the council chambers. Residential areas are to the south and east of the town centre. An industrial area is on the north-western side of the railway line. A second commercial area, based around Macarthur Railway Station is to the south-west, features the University of Western Sydney and Macarthur Square shopping mall, home to an outdoor entertainment and restaurant precinct known as Kellicar Lane.

Campbelltown lies on the main road and rail links from Sydney to the south-west. The M5 South Western Motorway links Campbelltown north to Liverpool, Sydney Airport and Sydney CBD and south to Goulburn and Canberra. Campbelltown and Macarthur railway stations are on the Southern line of the CityRail network. Campbelltown also services the Airport and East Hills Lines and is the main terminus of the Cumberland and intercity Southern Highlands lines.

Campbelltown is also well serviced by buses, with connections from Campbelltown Station to virtually all surrounding suburbs of Campbelltown and Camden. There are also services from Campbelltown to Glenfield and Picton, via Camden.

Campbelltown Hospital is on the southern edge of the city near Ambarvale and is part of the Sydney South West Area Health Service.

Campbelltown is home to the Macarthur Campus of the University of Western Sydney. There are several public and high schools.

According to the 2006 census Campbelltown had a populationof 8013. The majority of residents were Australian born (69%) with the next most common places of birth England (4.3%) and New Zealand (2.5%). There was a significant minority of Arabic speakers and a higher than average number of people with indigenous backgrounds (2.9%).

Campbelltown is well known for its strong sporting culture, including rugby league, cricket, athletics and soccer.
