Batemans Bay BridgeBatemans Bay is a town and a bay in the South Coast region of NSW.

The town is located on the Princes Highway about 280km from Sydney, 760km from Melbourne and 151km from Canberra.

It has a population of almost 11,000 and is administered by the Eurobodalla Shire Council.

Batemans Bay and its neighbouring areas boast some of the most spectacular and unspoiled coastline in NSW.

It is the closest seaside town to the city of Canberra, making it a popular holiday destination for residents from Australia's national capital.

It is also a popular retiree haven but has begun to attract young families seeking affordable housing and a relaxed seaside lifestyle. Other local industries include a sawmill, oyster farming, forestry, eco-tourism and retail services.

The majority of shops are aimed mainly at the tourist industry, as during major holidays the population almost triples. Village Centre Batemans Bay is the largest shopping complex in the town.

Batemans Bay is home to the famous Clyde River oyster. Seafood features prominently on the menu of the many local waterside restaurants. There is a wide range of restaurants to choose from, including family oriented establishments, cafes, takeaway and fine waterfront dining. Many dining and entertainment facilities are sited to take advantage of the views across the Clyde estuary, ocean and to the mountains in the west. Others are situated close to the beaches that adorn the coastal centres.

For golfers, Batemans Bay offers a 27-hole championship golf course. The associated club, along with other pubs and clubs in town, welcome visitors and many offer regular live entertainment.

The Clyde River runs throughout the heart of Batemans Bay and is popular with estuary fishers chasing bream and flathead. Offshore, there is excellent reef and game fishing. There are dozens of clean beaches, some with gentle shallow waters perfect for young children and others to challenge experienced surfers.

Boating, diving, windsurfing, body and board surfing are all popular pastimes. There’s also mini golf, an animal park, tennis, museums and galleries, and a summertime carnival with amusements galore. Batemans Bay is also well located for driving, trekking or walks in surrounding areas.

There are several schools in the town - Batemans Bay Primary School, St Bernard's Primary School, Sunshine Bay Primary and Batemans Bay High School. Batemans Bay District Hospital also services the area and its surrounds.

Batemans Bay also offers community transport for people requiring assistance (eligibility requirements apply). The Eurobodalla Shire Council provides door-to-door transport, running a regular schedule of trips across the shire, as well as out of the area to Canberra, Nowra and Bega. The trips include shopping, social and recreational activities, medical appointments and treatment, and special events. A fee applies, but all fees go back into providing more trips.
