THAT LIST

People try on clothes to ensure they fit, feel comfortable and are attractive. What about a home?  It’s the most expensive purchase you’ll ever make. Isn’t it important to “try on” a home before buying it?

It’s usual to look for a home in places that are convenient to work and schools, to take the daily commute into consideration, so why not take the routine activities of family members into account, too? So make a list of what matters to you. Then go shopping. Look at a lot of houses. After you come out of each one, have a talk about how it measured up to the list. Probably, after a few inspections, you’ll vary the list as your experience of what’s new and available grows.

Don’t be side-tracked by pretty things like a brass bed, some wicker, lots of healthy house plants, and a few Victorian pieces of furniture with silver framed family photos clustered on top. Admire what’s been done with the house, but the furnishings and decorations will go with the vendor.

Remember when you look at a house, you get the bare bones and not all the frills. Knowing what’s important to you can save costly mistakes.  The process of “trying on” a house helps you evaluate what’s important.  You’ll find it’s worth the effort.
