"Try on" a Home Before you Buy

It’s common place to try dresses, pants or shoes before buying them. Even try a new meal before you buy the ingredients to make it. People instinctively know they need to try things to be sure they feel comfortable or taste right. Isn’t it even more important to “try on” a home before you purchase it?

It’s usual to look for a home in places that are convenient to work and schools. Why not take the daily, weekly, or monthly activities of family members consciously into account, too?

Make a list of what matters most, start shopping. Look at lots of houses and after each one, have a talk about how it measured up to your list.

Pretend you could be looking at a brick house, all on one level, with a fireplace in the living room, and patio doors from the master bedroom and dining rooms to an enormous deck with a hot tub. It’s beautifully decorated in a sort of “pared down Victorian” style and has lots of healthy house plants. You might leave the house and think “That house is so pretty and so nicely decorated, I didn’t give any thought to how I’d live in it. I just wanted it.” But on reflection you might think “l admired what had been done with the house, but it isn’t right for me.” Knowing what’s important to you.
