WINTER FIRE SAFETY

Its cold out, and its raining. These are not usually the times we think about testing the smoke alarms. But really, there is no better time than now. We have our heaters on, the electric blanket warming, and laundry strung out in desperate attempt to dry by the fire. We all know fire safety is a hot topic during the summer months, but according to the NSW Fire & Rescue, 30% of fires are occurring during the winter months.

So use this as an opportunity to refresh your knowledge, change your perspective and make your home safer this winter. To get started, consider the following:

  • If you have a fireplace in your home make sure the chimney is clean, and its properly ventilated
  • Keep wet clothing at least 1 metre from heaters or fireplaces and never leave unattended.
  • Take care to keep curtains, tablecloths and bedding away from portable heaters.
  • If you use a clothes dryer make sure you clean the lint filter each and every time you use it.
  • Always extinguish candles or any other open flames before going to bed.
  • Most importantly, have an adequate number of suitable smoke alarms installed throughout your home and make sure that you test them regularly.
  • Have a written home escape plan, and practice it with your children.
  • If you have a fireplace always place a screen in front of it when in use.
  • Check electric blankets and appliances for damage or frayed cords before use.
  • Store matches or lighters in a secure place not accessible to young children.

If you aren’t sure where to start, a home safety checklist is a great place to start. As for imediate action why not get up right now and check your smoke alarms. There is no better time than now to protect your family and home.
