ARE YOU CYCLONE READY?

La Niña is back and the Top End is set for a rainy few months (we don't call it the Wet Season for nothing!).

With BoM predicting above-median rainfalli this wet, now is the time to make sure you are ready for the possibility of a cyclone. We've got you covered with a handy guide to help you protect your home and family from the risk of injury or damage, with tips on what to have in your emergency kit and how to make sure your property is prepped for the wet.

Emergency Kit

Ensure your kit will sustain you and your household for 3 days, in the event that power & water supplies and communication methods are affected by extreme weather conditions. Make sure everyone in your household knows where the kit is located and that it's in a dry & easy to reach place.

& clean drinking water (10L per person)
& non-perishable foods (and a can opener)
& portable cooker & cooking/eating utensils
& candles, waterproof matches, torch and spare batteries
& battery-operated radio with spare batteries
& first aid kit with facemasks & hand sanitiser
& blankets/sleeping bags
& cash
& important family documents (birth certs, passports, marriage cert, insurance policies, etc)
& toilet paper & essential toiletries
& sealable waterproof bags
& mobile phone, charger, and power bank

Prepare Your Home

Use these tips from TIO to make sure your home is secure and prepared for extreme weather conditions.

& Ensure trees & branches are clear of your home. If trees are near powerlines call Power and Water on 1800 245 090
& Remove loose material that could cause injury or damage during extreme winds from your property
& Ensure your overflow relief gully (ORG) is free of debris, the ORG protects your home from sewage overflows
& Check for signs of corrosion, rotten timber, termite attacks or loose fixings

A little bit of inspection and repair can save you a lot of time and trouble once the rain starts falling. If you pay attention to your house as each season changes, small maintenance repairs will spare your home from major damage in the future.
