  • Family home of late Mullumbimby medical veteran Dr Suresh to go to auction
  • Dr Suresh served Mullumbimby community for 36 years before his passing in 2012

The stunning family home of the late Byron Shire medical legend, Dr Surendranath Rananavare, otherwise known as Dr Suresh, is set to go to auction with Raine & Horne Byron Bay.

5 Kanandah Court, Ocean ShoresThe four bedroom, four bathroom property at 5 Kanandah Court, Ocean Shores, known as Shanti Niketan (or Abode of Peace), was the late doctor’s private sanctuary for nearly 30 years before his passing in 2012.

According to selling agent Janis Perkins, from Raine & Horne Byron Bay, the property is a part of local history.

“Whoever buys this property will be very lucky, not only because of the home’s sensational Pacific Ocean views, but also because it belonged to a local legend who tirelessly served the Mullumbimby community for 36 years,” said Ms Perkins.

Dr Suresh arrived in Mullumbimby in 1976, practising as a solo medical practitioner from his Burringbar Street Practice until his death at the age of 71.

The highly-regarded doctor was Mullumbimby’s longest-serving Visiting Medical Officer (VMO), and assisted a clientele numbering in the thousands across the Byron Shire and further afield, while also encouraging the next generation of medical practitioners.

“Dr Suresh was an amazing human being, who passed on his knowledge to other young registrars and nurses, while also helping the local indigenous community and raising thousands of dollars for countless organisations,” said Ms Perkins.

In 2000, Dr Suresh also found acclaim when he was chosen as a torch bearer for the Sydney Olympics, in the process becoming the first Indian in the world to carry the torch.

The doctor’s strong ties to the community and extensive network of partnerships are expected to result in a big turnout at the auction, which will be held on Saturday April 12th.

“I’m expecting lots of interest in this special property, which is spread over two levels, offers separate guest accommodation, and includes a gymnasium, spa and sauna, double garage and generous decks.

“Dr Suresh’s family will also be coming from India for the auction, as he unfortunately had no relatives in Australia, and they will be cheering on the bidding,” added Ms Perkins.
